What is rental reimbursement coverage in Texas?
This guide explains what rental reimbursement coverage pays for, the daily and dollar limits that shape what you get, when the other driver's company pays instead of yours, how theft fits in, and how to decide whether the coverage belongs on your policy.
The short answer: rental reimbursement coverage is an optional part of a Texas auto policy that pays for a rental car while yours is out of action for a covered reason. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) describes it this way in its auto FAQ: "If you have 'rental reimbursement coverage' on your policy, it will pay for a rental car if your car was stolen or is being repaired because of an accident your policy covers." It pays a set amount per day, up to the policy's limits, and only for the time the company considers reasonable.
What does rental reimbursement coverage pay for?
It pays for substitute transportation while your car is out of action. TDI's auto insurance guide says rental reimbursement coverage "pays for you to rent a car if yours is stolen or being repaired after an accident," and adds: "Some policies also pay for taxis or ride-hailing services."
Two details in TDI's description are worth reading closely:
- It is tied to a covered loss. TDI's FAQ wording is a repair "because of an accident your policy covers." TDI describes accident repairs and theft, not other reasons a car ends up in the shop; ask your agent how your policy treats a repair that isn't an accident claim.
- It can cover more than a rental counter. If you wouldn't rent a car anyway, ask whether the policy pays for taxis or ride-hailing instead, since TDI notes some policies do.
A separate question people mix this up with is how your policy applies to a car you rent on a trip. TDI has a page on rental car insurance for that.
How much does it pay?
TDI's auto guide describes the limits in two sentences:
"Your insurance company will pay for a rental car only for the time it believes is reasonable to repair or replace your car. It will pay a set amount each day and only up to your policy's rental coverage dollar limits."
Reading that description, three things bound what you get, and your own policy wording says where each one is set:
| What TDI describes | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| A set amount each day | A rental that costs more per day may leave the difference to you |
| The policy's rental dollar limits | The coverage pays only up to those limits |
| The time the company believes is reasonable | The company pays for the repair time it believes is reasonable |
Before you need it, the useful questions for your agent are what the daily amount and the dollar limit are on your policy, and what a week in a rental costs where you live.
When does the other driver's company pay instead?
If the other driver caused the accident, TDI says the rental may not come out of your coverage at all. TDI's auto guide says that in that case "the other driver's insurance company will pay for you to rent a car. You can keep the rental car for the time the company believes is reasonable for your car to be repaired."
TDI's guide also lists the situations where your own policy pays for a rental:
- You have rental reimbursement coverage and were in an accident.
- You have comprehensive coverage and your car is stolen.
- You have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and the driver who caused the accident didn't have insurance.
Our guide on what to do after a car accident in Texas covers the claim itself.
Does rental reimbursement apply when your car is stolen?
Yes, in TDI's description. Both TDI passages above name a stolen car alongside accident repairs, and TDI's guide separately lists having comprehensive coverage with your car stolen among the situations where a rental is paid for. TDI lists those as two situations; which coverage responds on your policy, and on what terms, is a question for your agent. TDI's theft tip sheet suggests exactly that: ask your agent or company whether you have rental reimbursement or can add it. Our guide to car theft insurance in Texas covers the theft claim itself.
Do you need rental reimbursement coverage?
It depends on what a carless week would cost you, and you can answer that with your own numbers:
- Is there a second car in the household that would cover the gap?
- If not, what does a rental cost near you? Compare that daily price with the daily amount a policy offers.
- How long could a repair run? A low dollar limit can run out before a long repair ends, even when the daily amount looks fine.
TDI's auto guide describes rental reimbursement in its types-of-coverages section, which says you can choose whether to buy the coverages beyond the required ones. The premium for it is set by each company, so the comparison is that company's price against the rental cost you'd face. Our guide on what full coverage means in Texas explains how optional coverages fit around the required ones.
Key facts
- It pays for a rental, not repairs. TDI's auto guide describes rental reimbursement as paying for you to rent a car if yours is stolen or being repaired after an accident, with some policies also paying for taxis or ride-hailing.
- It is tied to a covered claim. TDI's auto FAQ ties the benefit to a car stolen or repaired because of an accident the policy covers.
- Limits shape the benefit. TDI's auto guide says the company pays a set daily amount, up to the policy's rental dollar limits, for the repair time it believes is reasonable.
- Another driver at fault changes who pays. TDI's auto guide says that if the other driver caused the accident, that driver's insurance company will pay for your rental for the time it believes is reasonable.
- Theft appears in two places. TDI's auto guide lists rental reimbursement with a stolen car, and comprehensive coverage with a stolen car, as situations where a rental is paid for; its theft tip sheet says to ask your agent whether you have the coverage or can add it.

Take the next step
Pull out your declarations page and look for a rental reimbursement line. If it isn't there, or the daily amount wouldn't rent anything near you, that is worth a conversation with an agent before you need a claim.
